Background: Sang Ju Yin has been relied upon by practitioners for many, many years to combat the first signs of cold. It was originally formulated two centuries ago. Sang Ju Yin directly resolves ‘heat toxins’ with two herbs: Melberry Leaf (Sang Ye) and Chrysanthemum Flower (Ju Hua). They make up 27% of the formula. What, you ask, are ‘heat toxins’? In TCM herbal medicine lingo, wind-warm syndrome in the initial stage is often marked by cough, low fever and mild thirst; including such diseases with symptoms similar to influenza, acute bronchitis, acute tonsillitis, epidemic conjunctivitis, etc. Viruses causing upper respiratory infections are ‘toxins’ that cause a fever (heat) response as further developed. Sang Ju Yin has been a well-known formula for an early remedy to prevent and/or mitigate flu-like respiratory illness when the cause is unclear. It dispels wind, removes heat, and promotes the dispersing function of the lung to arrest cough. The rest of the herbs in the formula reduce heat energy in the body, clear sore throat and push the heat toxins ‘to the surface’ and out of the body.
When to Use: Sang Ju Yin is commonly used at the first sign of cold. It is particularly effective for colds beginning with COUGH without without fever symptom.
